Beginner classes are divided by ages. The age groups have been divided this way due to the differing maturity and learning styles of the age groups. Therefore dancers aged 4-9 years are in one class, while the 10-13 year olds are in the next class. Adults and teenagers over 14 years are grouped into the adult class. The Experienced dancers class is mixed age groups as they have already mastered basic steps and dances and can pick up new dances and choreographies a lot quicker. Dancers from all classes are encouraged to compete in the annual North Australian Eisteddfod in May of each year. Thursday classes and Sunday classes are a little different in the way they are divided as we need to have space for Hardshoe class.
All dancers in this class will learn softshoe dances - reels, jigs, slip jigs, single jigs and ceili (pronounced kay-lee) or group dances. As dancers become more experienced and comfortable dancing they will progress to learning the hardshoe dances such as hornpipes, treble reels, treble jigs and other 'noisy' dances as well as set dances.
The Performance Company Class is a seperate class to the General Classes. Beginners may enrol in this class as well if they wish to however their stage performance times may be limited by their abilities. Whilst all dancers will have the opportunity to perform at school fetes etc, the Performance Company will be our primary performing group at cultural or major events. Dancers in this class are made up of many age groups and mixed abilities. The Performance Company concentrates on learning choreographed pieces that will not be taught in the general classes. Members of this class need to have dedication and be willing to practice at home alot as well as work well as team players. Performance Company dancers will also have more creative input into the outcome of the choreography of the dances they will be performing.
